Manchester United’s three worst players against RB Leipzig

A dismal night in Germany saw Manchester United’s Champions League campaign come to a very abrupt end.

United went a goal down in the second minute and did not improve.

The damage was done in previous losses, also, particularly the one away to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Even so, this was a very poor performance from United which was another instance of the players failing to perform on a big occasion

This was not a night of vintage displays, and it was one where poor performances stood out more so.

Here is a look at United’s three biggest villains on the night in Leipzig…

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Poor defending set the tone for United’s night and nobody started worse than Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The right-back was caught out of position by Angelino, and looked shaky all first half as United’s players struggled to gel in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Wan-Bissaka was unsurprisingly substituted, having failed to offer anything from an attacking perspective, looking hesitant and pensive in possession.

He completed just 78 per cent of his passes, and his night could be summed up by the fact he won just one tackle.

Harry Maguire

This was a terrible night for Harry Maguire. Ultimately it was his error which cost United.

He hesitated and looked lost, leaving Justin Kluivert with a tap-in.

Maguire’s forays forward contributed little. He tried to connect with corners and crosses and had no impact on any of them.

The defence was poor in the first half especially and the club captain and leader must take responsibility for that. It is his role along with the manager to ensure the backline is prepared.

This game strengthened the case that United need to sign a new centre-back, and Maguire did not look like a £80 million player.

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw has done well in a back three before, but he did not fare well against Leipzig.

He was getting pulled around and Leipzig’s second goal saw him out of position.

In Shaw’s defence, he has not played since October, and so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a place throwing him back in.

It was always likely, because Solskjaer trusts Shaw, but it did not pay off in Germany. He was among United’s poorer performers.
