Manchester United’s most highly paid player is not rated by Ruben Amorim, he’s quietly been axed along with Rashford

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has seen lots of lows since taking on the job, leaving no illusions about the scale of the task.

If there is one point Manchester United fans can agree on, it’s that another squad overhaul is required to help out new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Results under Amorim have been mixed, while showing occasional promise, it’s clear the coach is not happy with many players in his squad, and needs those better suited to his system.

Other either lack the desire, like Marcus Rashford, or are past their sell-by date, like Victor Lindelof or Christian Eriksen.

Another who has now entered this list, is former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro is being quietly axed

Manchester United fans have become used to Marcus Rashford’s non-inclusion in the squad. He was axed for disciplinary reasons a month ago, before releasing a bombshell interview explaining he sees his future away from Old Trafford.

Rashford has made the squad only once since, not at all in 2025, while negotiating an exit.

His removal from the squad has been a big talking point, while Amorim is also making another big move over Casemiro, one that has garnered a lot less attention.

Casemiro has featured in every Manchester United squad under Amorim – yet the head coach is making his feelings very clear, he simply does not rate him.

The only game Casemiro started was against Newcastle, when Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte were suspended, and he was substituted after 65 minutes.

His other showing was 27 minutes as a substitute against Wolves. Prior to this, he had started and played 65 minutes in the win over Everton.

Casemiro was valued highly by Ruud van Nistelrooy during his interim stint, who built his midfield around him and Manuel Ugarte. It seemed to work.

Ruben Amorim feels very differently. He is reluctant to use Casemiro at all, and now prefers to use Toby Collyer from the bench, as he has done in the past three games, a player with no Premier League starts in his career.

United’s two highest earners could leave

It feels as though Casemiro is being managed out of the club, Rio Ferdinand believes he’s heading for an exit, with Ruben Amorim making clear he is not valued.

Casemiro has been linked with an exit to Saudi Arabia, a move that would suit the club at this stage, lowering the wage bill.

Casemiro is Manchester United’s highest earner on £350,000 per week, the only player to earn more than Marcus Rashford’s £300,000 per week.

United are now potentially looking at moving both players on, and while this may include a loan at first with a salary contribution in Rashford’s case, Casemiro could be a total sale.

Casemiro may be currently occupying a spot on United’s bench, but he is clearly not needed at present, Amorim’s actions show.

He could be kept until the end of the season as back-up, amid a lack of funds to bring in a new midfielder – but make no mistake, Casemiro’s Manchester United career is on it’s last legs.
