Manchester United teenager Harry Amass has been one of the stars of pre-season, and there are high hopes.

Ongoing problems at left-back have created an opening for a new star to emerge. 17-year-old prospect Harry Amass has put himself into the mix.

Amass started all three games on the US tour and has featured in all five pre-season matches. Amass starred in our player ratings, with manager Erik ten Hag commenting that he has taken a ‘step forward’, also noting that he has a long way to go.

Ten Hag is optimistic Amass can eventually reach Kobbie Mainoo’s level, with the youngster delighted by comparisons to Luke Shaw.

Harry Amass eager to seize chances

Luke Shaw is expected to start the first game of the season at left-back, while potential incoming signing Noussair Mazraoui can also fill in at left-back.

Tyrell Malacia is still a couple of months away. It is a sign of faith in Amass, that United are not prioritising a more established left-back signing, which had been on the agenda heading into the tour.

Amass knows he will have to earn his chances and take them when they arrive. He knows that making a good impression can elevate him further and lead to more opportunities.

The teenager has explained his mindset, commenting that while he is more diminutive than his opponents, he will play with no fear.

Amass told Forbes: “You’ve just got to show your aggressive side, you might be young, smaller than the opponent but you have to show you are aggressive, and don’t back down.”

“No conversations have been had yet, but this pre-season is a chance to prove that if I am picked I can do it.

“We’ll see what happens when Luke and Tyrell come back but my intention is to play first-team football at this club. If the opportunity comes, I’ve got to take it with both hands, it could change my career.”

Manchester United won’t make Fernandez mistake

Last summer Manchester United loaned out promising left-back Alvaro Fernandez, rather than give the young talent a chance.

And in January, the club decided to loan him to Benfica, a deal which has now become permanent.

The decision not to give Fernandez a chance raised some questions, this was a young, promising left-back, who deserved an opportunity, in a position where United were not just needy, but desperate.

This time, United will keep Harry Amass around, and whether his chances come as soon as this weekend in the Community Shield, or in a few months time in the Europa League, the youngster will be ready and willing to give it his all.
