Tyrick Mitchell to Manchester United an option as Red Devils step up left-back search

Manchester United’s 2024/25 campaign has begun with the same theme of last season – a dearth of left-backs.

Disappointingly, Manchester United are heading on tour of the USA without a senior left-back.

It is not totally unexpected. Luke Shaw is actually fit after featuring in the Euro 2024 final.

Meanwhile Tyrell Malacia is back in individual training, staying behind to undergo an individual programme.

Manchester United want Tyrick Mitchell

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are devoting extra focus now on trying to recruit additional help at left-back.

One of the names under consideration is one we were already aware of is Atletico Madrid star David Hancko.

Another in the mix, is Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, who is appealing for multiple reasons.

Mitchell’s age, 24, means he could be a long-term solution rather than a stop gap one.

He is also an England international, capped earlier this year, and many felt he was unfairly left out of the England squad amid injuries at the position.

The biggest factor for United is that Tyrick Mitchell has only one year remaining on his Crystal Palace contract.

This gives United the upper hand in negotiations, with Palace fearing losing the prospect on a free transfer next summer.

There is another important factor to consider too, Tyrick Mitchell is reliable. He started 37 Premier League games for Palace last season.

Mitchell inspired by Ashley Cole

Speaking to Yahoo Sports in 2021, Tyrick Mitchell spoke about the players he looked up to when he was a youngster.

He said: “Growing up there were a lot of full-backs I looked up to – Philip Lahm, Ashley Cole, [Branislav] Ivanovic, a lot of people, but especially Ashley Cole and how aggressive he was in a one-vs-one. He was like, ‘You are not passing’. So he was a massive inspiration for my game.

“Some people get thrills off nutmegging people or beating someone, some people get thrills off scoring.

“But my one is I like it when I step on the pitch to see I had that opponent. That person couldn’t get past me or had to change wings, or the manager had to substitute that person.”
