Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo both have big decisions to make this summer whether he will stay at the club for another season.
If Ronaldo does move on, then United may move to a more fluid attacking style, and that is where potential signing Christian Nkunku could come in. ESPN reported last week that Ralf Rangnick has recommended Nkunku to the club.
United need a new striker regardless of Ronaldo’s future, and while Nkunku is not a striker in a traditional sense, he has been leading the line for RB Leipzig and can also play out wide and as a number 10.
Nkunku scored a header on Thursday night in RB Leipzig’s 2-2 draw in the Europa League against Real Sociedad.
At the weekend he continued his impressive form and showed why Manchester United should pay attention with another strong performance in the Bundesliga.
Nkunku scored twice, once from the penalty spot, after winning the spot-kick himself. This took his tally to 13 Bundesliga goals this season.
He did all this while creating five goalscoring chances as Leipzig won 6-1 away at Hertha Berlin, with Leipzig scoring five goals in the first half.
The Frenchman completed 94% of his passes, and could have had a hat-trick if he was not substituted in the 69th minute.
Nkunku has scored 22 goals this season already and also provided 10 assists. It is a remarkable record at this stage of the season for a player who could add a lot to United’s side.
Amadou Haidara stars too
Leipzig’s win also saw a very strong performance from another reported Manchester United target, Amadou Haidara.
The Times linked Haidara as a priority target for the club under Rangnick, but his £33 million release clause can only be activated in the summer.
Haidara was on the scoresheet in Leipzig’s win, and dominated the midfield. He touched the ball 104 times, more than any player on the pitch. He also created two goalscoring chances.
United’s scouts will have been impressed with both players, who Ralf Rangnick knows well and will recommend highly. Transfer decisions will ultimately be down to the next manager, yet, you feel United cannot go wrong with signing either Nkunku or Haidara this summer.
