Manchester United are planning a renovation of Old Trafford in addition to the plans to improve Carrington.
United confirmed the plans with an update via the club website, describing the plans to modernise Old Trafford as ‘exciting’.
United have to run before they can walk, however, and during the newly released fan forum Q&A minutes, the club were asked point blank, ‘When will the roof be fixed?’
Roof has become symbolic of Glazer neglect
Images of water pouring from the Old Trafford roof have become symbolic of the Glazer family’s lack of investment in Old Trafford over the past 16 years.
After fan protests were held in May, sparked by the Super League but fuelled by long-standing Glazer resentment, the club owners have finally made plans to improve the stadium and training ground.
Earlier this year in United’s home defeat to Leicester at the end of last season, Times journalist Paul Hirst illustrated how water had leaked onto electrical equipment in the press box.
Old Trafford operations venue Jim Liggett responded to the roof question, with Joel Glazer not in attendance for the December fan forum.
Liggett said: “As with any stadium, we have a planned cyclical maintenance programme, and as Collette (Roche) mentioned in her update, have commenced planning around major redevelopments of the stadium.
“As soon as an issue is reported, e.g. with a leak, we have a roofing contractor who undertake reactive repair work. It is not uncommon with a structure the size of Old Trafford to have issues reported, a number of examples could be seen in the international matches recently.
“It should be noted that the ‘leak’ in the Sir Bobby Charlton stand roof that was widely circulated on social media in 2019 was caused by the siphon system that drains surface water from the roof, not by a leak in the roof itself.”
United’s training ground and stadium plans
Collette Roche, Manchester United’s Chief operating officer, explained that early meetings have taken place: “These meetings have produced exciting potential ideas, although it’s important to note that we’re still at an early stage and it’s premature to talk about timetables.”
She also clarified that United have no plans to move away from Old Trafford, permanently or temporarily while the works take place.
United are further along with plans to renovate the Carrington training ground, with a cohesive integration planned for first team, women’s, and academy facilities.
The club have appointed planners to start plotting out proposals for the improvements, although there is no word on budget or dates.
