Manchester United loanee ‘fantastic’ in derby as he’s hailed by World Cup winner

Mason Greenwood produced a ‘fantastic’ display on Tuesday as the Manchester United loanee secured Getafe a late point against Atletico Madrid and earned some glowing praise from none other than Antoine Griezmann.

Despite sharing a pitch with the likes of Memphis Depay, a career-best Alvaro Morata and the aforementioned Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano, Mason Greenwood stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

The Manchester United loanee is rapidly getting back to his scintillating best over in Spain. England international Greenwood was nothing short of talismanic as Getafe thumped Sevilla 3-0 away from home over the weekend, and struck fear into the heart of Diego Simeone’s Atletico backline in an enthralling Madrid derby just three days later.

“Mason Greenwood was really causing us problems in the second half,” 2018 World Cup winner Griezmann said at full-time, via The Sun. “We couldn’t stop him, and it cost us the game.”

Getafe, relegation battlers not so long ago, are now only nine points adrift of Atletico. And – thanks to the performances of a forward who is proving himself to be a ‘Barcelona or Real Madrid-level player’ in La Liga – European qualification is far from out of the question

“I said it from the first day he arrived, he is a fantastic player who would reach his best level little by little,,” Getafe coach Jose Bordalas beams. “We have treated him really well, and the whole team has played a great game.”

Greenwood earns Griezmann’s praise

Erik ten Hag can only dream of possessing a forward in Greenwood’s form at present, Marcus Rashford and Antony well below last season’s standards and Rasmus Hojlund yet to open his account in the Premier League.

United could look to bring in a new centre-forward in the winter, with Serhou Guirassy, Timo Werner and even Mauro Icardi among an array of potentially affordable signings.
