Getafe ’want to buy’ Mason Greenwood when his loan spell from Premier League giants Manchester United comes to an end in 2024, the La Liga club’s president Angel Torres confirms.
Whether they can, however, is another matter entirely.
As you might imagine, Mason Greenwood’s future remains up in the air, Manchester United eventually backing down on their plan to bring the England international back into their plans before farming him out on loan to Getafe in September (The Athletic).
A classic ‘kicking the can down the road’ sort of situation if there ever was one.

Manchester United face Mason Greenwood decision
A source told The Sun a fortnight ago that the chances of Greenwood being offered a fresh start by the Red Devils are now slim, to say the least. But should they choose to cash in, United are likely to demand the kind of sum well in excess of the fees Getafe are used to paying.
The Madrid-based club’s current record signing, Marc Cucurella, set them back just £10 million.
“With Greenwood, we are not only planning on him staying another year, but we also want to buy him,” Getafe president Angel Torres tells Cadena Ser, though it remains to be seen if this is merely wishful thinking or a realistic possibility.
The Sun add that, should Greenwood leave the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, Valencia or Real Sociedad could both make moves to keep the forward in Spain.
After such a long spell out of action, it unsurprisingly took Greenwood a while to get back up to full speed. But a stunning long-range finish against Almeria in November was a reminder of the dazzling potential the Bradford-born 21-year-old displayed when exploding onto the scene at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a couple of seasons ago.
‘Real Madrid-level player’
“The goal (vs Almeria) was just breathtaking,” Spanish football expert Terry Gibson, himself a former Man United forward, told the El Tel and Jon’s La Liga Weekly podcast. “He looks now to be nearing full fitness and he’s going to be an incredible asset to Getafe.”
“He shouldn’t be at Getafe in terms of the quality and the level of his play. You look at him and you think; ‘That is a Barcelona or Real Madrid-level player’,” Gibson adds.
“It was a brilliant goal. A brilliant strike. A look of surprise from everyone in the stadium because they are not used to that quality!
“From a football perspective, he is of a level far too high for Getafe. He’s not going to be at Getafe next season.”
