Manchester United are expected to have a busier-than-usual January transfer window, with this being Ruben Amorim’s first window at the helm.
There are some clear holes to fill in the squad and Man Utd have already been linked with multiple players, the developments of whom are moving quickly.
Chief among them has been Randal Kolo Muani, the out-of-favour PSG striker who United have been linked with a loan move for to solve their goalscoring issues.
Luis Enrique has made sure that Kolo Muani will leave the club in January and United, along with the likes of Juventus and Spurs, have been credited with an interest.
Beyond scoring goals, United have already been told that Kolo Muani will bring the key quality that the majority of their current Man Utd squad has been accused of missing.
Randal Kolo Muani a ‘future great’
Kolo Muani had his breakout in the German league where he impressed one and all with his all-around display for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
Things have soured so quickly for him that it is easy to forget his services were acquired by PSG for nearly £85 million and even that was regarded as a coup, so intense was the interest in him.
United were linked to him then but ultimately bought Rasmus Hojlund who has had streaks of goalscoring spells punctuated by long dry runs.
That inconsistency is symptomatic of the whole United squad which is why what German football legend Lothar Matthaus said about Kolo Muani will be music to the ears of those at Old Trafford.
Back in February 2023, when Kolo Muani was tearing it up in Germany, Mathaus wrote about him in a column that he was a ‘major asset’ for the Bundesliga where his biggest quality is that he turns up for every game, a consistency which is a mark of ‘future greats’.
He said: “For the Bundesliga, Kolo Muani is a major asset. He is impressively easy in his movements, full of composure in front of the opposing goal and he often has the last word in duels. Where he imposes himself the most is that he shines in every match. I don’t remember him ever missing his subject. That’s the mark of future greats.”
Man Utd squad screaming for consistency
Kolo Muani hasn’t had the opportunity to play regularly for PSG, often coming on only when the match is decided to play the last few minutes.
Even then, he’s managed to score twice and assist once in just over 450 minutes of football, a mark of a player who tries to make the most of every minute he’s given.
Ruben Amorim was shocked at the performance level of Man Utd after the Liverpool game while the inconsistency made Bruno Fernandes upset as to why they couldn’t do it every week.
In Kolo Muani, they will get a player who made his reputation on the back of being consistent and not just in scoring goals, but by excelling in all facets of play.
He’d be a great addition to the team from all perspectives- financial, tactical, and sporting. The intangibles like consistency are a major bonus to a deal that was already looking too good to be true.
