Ruben Amorim learned a major thing about Man Utd players after Liverpool draw, he had it all wrong before

Manchester United under Ruben Amorim continued their strange habit of turning up for the big games in their biggest one yet, drawing 2-2 at Anfield.

It’s a complete flip from the state of affairs under Erik ten Hag, when Man Utd didn’t look comfortable in big games even when they were in a good run of form.

Amad and Lisandro Martinez scored to seal an unlikely positive result for United, especially considering the expectations, or the lack of them, coming into the game.

It was a game of many lessons for Amorim, like Manuel Ugarte’s untouchable status, Amad’s key intangible, or the importance of Bruno Fernandes to the team.

However, a major thing he learned about his Man Utd squad as a whole proved him completely wrong because what he thought before didn’t turn out to be the case.

Ruben Amorim proven wrong about Man Utd

Since coming to the club, Amorim has said all the right things, echoing fans at certain moments and explaining each decision of his clearly with charisma.

He might have got the odd tactical decision wrong, but his assessment of the problems at United has been spot on which has filled the fans with confidence for the future.

Against Liverpool, however, it couldn’t have been more obvious that he had gotten one major thing about his players at the club wrong.

Before the game, Amorim was batting for his players, saying they were anxious and afraid at moments and needed help to get through this difficult spell.

There was an acceptance at the club and beyond that this crop of players was just not good enough through no fault of their own, and a rebuild was needed in Amorim’s image.

However, the Liverpool game and the performance at Anfield seemed to have taken even Amorim by surprise. Effectively the same players who surrendered limply vs Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle seemed energised.

Amorim was upset after the game not because the team failed to win, but because they showed Amorim was wrong in his assessment.

The players are good enough, they just pick and choose when to turn up. That is a much more serious issue to tackle and the Man Utd manager had his “Eureka” moment with this performance.

Ruben Amorim will drill into the issue now

Amorim looked genuinely hurt and upset after the game because the crop of players he had been defending all this time showed a side he didn’t know existed.

He looked at a loss for words as to where this performance had been when Amorim was fronting the media after every limp loss, determined to shield the players.

He said after the match that people at United are “too comfortable” and “need a shock” to wake up from their slumber at times, not a sign of any successful team.

The manager looked like his eyes had been opened and with this, he will now drill into the issue, determined to uproot it from its cause.

He immediately threw down a gauntlet for the players to keep this standard from the next training itself because they have now shown their hand and what they can do when they want to turn up.

Amorim has identified issues and fixed them so far. Against Liverpool, he came to know that his diagnosis was all wrong. He looks like a man determined to not let that happen again.
