Man Utd loanee Sam Mather sends Ruben Amorim message in claim he has the trait Sir Alex Ferguson looked for

“The Manchester United way” has become a sort of mythical praise that nobody quite knows how to explain but everyone wants to see on the pitch.

It is effectively derived from the tradition of the historically dominant Man Utd teams under Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The philosophy can be summed up in three words, also used on the jersey once – Youth. Courage. Success.

Man Utd loanee Sam Mather seems dripped into that style if his comments after joining Tranmere Rovers on loan are any indication.

Sam Mather’s aim at Tranmere Rovers with Man Utd loan

Man Utd weren’t very active on the senior team front but the youth teams saw a lot of upheaval, Sam Mather’s loan being one of them.

Mather travelled for United’s pre-season and impressed for the U21 side this season so a senior loan was the next natural option.

Along with Louis Jackson, Mather joined League Two side Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season. He spoke about what he’ll bring to the table for his loan side and his words would have music to the ears of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary former Man Utd manager always wanted attacking players to “get the fans off their feet” and Mather used that exact phrase.

He said: “I’m hoping to bring a few of those experiences I’ve learnt along the way to Tranmere. Training with United’s first team there are a lot of big names.

“I’m a creative player who likes to get people off their feet and create a lot in the final third whether that’s goals, assists and creating chances for teammates.

“I think I can help in the final third to create chances and hopefully get goals and assists and help the team on and off the ball to get three points and climb the table.”

Sam Mather’s path to Man Utd’s first team

Mather looked like a surprise prospect when he went with United for their pre-season tour but Ruben Amorim’s appointment poses a unique challenge for him.

Aged 20 and on loan at a League Two side, Mather will have to perform out of his skin to earn a place again in United’s squad for their next pre-season.

The winger position is no longer available in Amorim’s system but the thing working in his favour is that his contract runs till 2027 so he can easily make his way up the leagues through loans over a period of time.

He’s saying all the right things for his first one and with Tranmere struggling to avoid relegation in League Two, he has the chance to do something memorable on his very first loan.
