Man Utd call Sam Mather into first team training alongside four more exciting young talents

Manchester United have begun preparations for the upcoming Premier League match against Southampton.

Erik ten Hag is glad to have his players back at Carrington after the international break, as the serious business gets back underway.

Manuel Ugarte missed the session as he was late back in the UK following an 11pm kick-off for Uruguay on Tuesday night.

But the good news is Ten Hag has confirmed Ugarte is available and will be part of the squad to travel to take on the Saints.

Sam Mather, Harry Amass and Jack Fletcher train

Manchester United’s training session was boosted by the presence of three young players in the first team mix.

This is not even including Toby Collyer, who has two appearances this season and is now considered a first team regular.

Harry Amass, United’s exciting young left-back, featured in the training session. He might have a chance to be involved in the Carabao Cup next week.

Jack Fletcher also featured, as he did before the international break. Fletcher has been nominated for the PL2’s player of the month award, and he too has a chance to feature against Barnsley.

The third player involved was FA Youth Cup winning winger Sam Mather, back in the group after featuring on the pre-season tour.

Defender Louis Jackson and attacker Ethan Williams also shared images on their Instagram accounts where they were in the session mixing in with the first team group.

Sam Mather in good form for under-21s

Sam Mather has been deserving of call-up amid a positive start to the season for Manchester United’s under-21 side.

Mather has scored two goals in four appearances, with both goals coming in his last two matches.

The 20-year-old had a brief spell on loan at Rochdale last season where he scored twice, his first professional goals.

His progress has not been as stratospheric as fellow FA Youth Cup winner Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, and a couple of injury issues have played a part in that.

Mather had brief opportunities during pre-season but not enough to really push his case, so he went back in with the under-21 squad rather than making an immediate jump.

United did hand Mather a new contract in the summer, and the winger’s form for the 21s has warranted another look for Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

A place in the squad against Barnsley next week is a possibility if Mather can continue to impress.
