Matthijs de Ligt fell short of being named the Man of the Match against Chelsea after Manchester United fans rated one stunning star’s performance above everyone else.

The 26-year-old Dutchman has been in impressive form since the start of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign and Matthijs de Ligt produced another solid showing.

De Ligt started as the right-sided centre-back in Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United tactical system for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Joining the former Ajax and Juventus star in the three-man backline was Luke Shaw as the left-sided centre-back and Harry Maguire was deployed as the central figure.

Both De Ligt and Luke Shaw saw out the full 90 minutes of United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea, while Harry Maguire was taken off in the second half of the contest.

Bruno Fernandes overshadows Matthijs de Ligt in Man Utd fans’ pick for Man of the Match after the Chelsea win at Old Trafford

Matthijs de Ligt earned praise for his display on Saturday evening, but the ex-Bayern Munich defender came second in the voting for the club’s Man-of-the-Match poll.

Bruno Fernandes made a real impact in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea and the 31-year-old skipper opened the scoring in the first half at Old Trafford.

The Portugal international made way late in the second half of the match, with Ruben Amorim replacing Fernandes with Kobbie Mainoo in the 87th minute.

Manchester United’s official website revealed the results from their poll for the standout star against Chelsea, with United fans settling on Fernandes as their pick.

Fernandes took home the lion’s share of the vote and the United midfielder polled a “whopping” 52 per cent in the ballot box among Red Devils supporters.

Who ranked in the top three alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Bruno Fernandes for Man Utd fans’ vote for Man of the Match vs Chelsea?

Joining De Ligt and Bruno Fernandes in the top three of United fans’ votes was none other than Bryan Mbeumo, who has been a standout performer this season.

Bryan Mbeumo caught the eye of United fans during the Chelsea match at Old Trafford and the former Brentford star impressed with his display on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Cameroon international started in the right-sided No 10 role under United manager Ruben Amorim and played 69 minutes in the Premier League tie.

Amorim withdrew Mbeumo for Mason Mount and the United summer signing has once again earned high praise after his ranking in the Man-of-the-Match vote.

Mbeumo secured 16 per cent of the votes from the United poll, putting him behind second-place De Ligt and first-place Fernandes in the overall result.
