Manchester United are moving closer to appointing Michael Carrick on a permanent basis.

‘Formal talks’ between Michael Carrick and Manchester United are underway and expected to result in him being appointed permanently.

Carrick has secured Champions League qualification for Manchester United, and he has the backing of fans and the players to stay on.

Crucially he has the support of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The Manchester United investor has signed off on appointing Carrick, and the details are being thrashed out.

He could also now get a little extra help too.

Michael Carrick latest involves Andrea Georgson

Manchester United are expected to appoint Michael Carrick on a two-year deal with an option for a third year.

The Athletic report that all of Carrick’s coaching staff are set to stay on including Steve Holland, and there could be additional help.

United are planning to hire a specialist set piece coach, and Andrea Georgson is being tipped to return.

Georgson was hired under Erik ten Hag in summer 2024, leaving his position as manager at Norwegian club Lillestrom.

He stayed on after Ten Hag was fired but saw his role reduced and changed under Ruben Amorim – leaving the club in summer 2025.

Georgson had previously worked in England during spells with Southampton, Arsenal and Brentford, and in Sweden with Malmo.

United backing Carrick is symbolic

It is symbolic that Manchester United are looking to back Michael Carrick with additional support around him.

United are expected to strengthen in the transfer market this summer – but investing in the coaching staff is every bit as important.

It’s notable that United could add a set piece coach again, with Carrick hitting out at the way the league has been officiated this season.

United do have a strong record at set pieces this season, but there is also room for improvement, and key contributor Casemiro is also set to depart.
