Manchester United could be set to make a further addition to the team’s ever-growing backroom staff.

After replacing Benni McCarthy and Mitchell van der Gaag with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake, Manchester United could be set to make another hire to the coaching staff.

Norwegian outlet Nettavisen report an ‘agreement is close’ for Manchester United to hire Andreas Georgson as another assistant coach.

United are prepared to meet a small buyout clause in Andreas Georgson’s current contract with Norwegian side Lillestrom.

Who is Andreas Georgson

Andreas Georgson has been working as the manager at Norwegian club Lillestrom, taking the job last December.

He was previously working as a set piece coach for Southampton, and has experience at two other Premier League clubs.

Georgson, now 42, began his coaching career with Swedish side Malmo. He was then hired by Brentford for the 2019/20 season, where he helped them reach the play-off final.

He was then poached to join Arsenal for the 2021/22 season. He joined Southampton in 2023 – before being tempted away by the manager’s job at Lillestrom.

His role at all three clubs was working as a set piece coach, and according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, this is part of the role he will conduct at Manchester United.

Georgson’s Lillestrom rank eight in the Norwegian Eliteserien, a 16-team division.

Jason Wilcox connection

There is a clear connection to Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox, who hired Georgson for Southampton a year ago.

The role of set piece coach is one United are looking to fill. This was part of the remit of Eric Ramsay, who left earlier in 2024 to take the manager job at MLS side Minnesota United.

The move for Georgson is another smart move from Ineos, bringing in a coach for a role who already has experience, who should be a very useful addition for the Red Devils.

Last season Manchester United scored only nine goals from set pieces, the 15th best record in the Premier League.
