Man Utd set for formal discussions with Michael Carrick over permanent role as head coach

Manchester United are preparing to make progress on their decision for a permanent head coach, with Michael Carrick putting a strong case forward to remain in charge beyond this season.

Ever since Michael Carrick returned to Manchester United in January, results have improved tenfold, ultimately leading to Champions League qualification.

Although some members of the media have questioned United’s decision not to announce Carrick before the end of the season, the club has stuck to its initial plan of waiting until the end of the season.

However, updates are emerging from Old Trafford that suggest talks will soon be underway for the hot seat.

Man Utd will open formal discussions with Michael Carrick next week

Carrick has done a tremendous job since taking over from Ruben Amorim at United.

At that point in January, United’s chances of playing in the Champions League next season were remote at best. The transition under Carrick changed that, and now the Red Devils are back competing in Europe’s biggest competition.

According to Sky Sports, United are ready to open talks with Carrick about him continuing as head coach beyond the end of the season.

Carrick’s current deal expires in the summer, but there are many arguments in favour of the 44-year-old getting the job permanently.

Formal discussions are expected to begin before United’s final game of the season against Brighton on May 24.

It is understood that United chiefs have not completely ruled out the possibility of someone else taking charge for next season, but that would be an unpopular discussion unless Ineos have a candidate such as Luis Enrique ready to come in.

The report states Carrick has been identified as the man they want to talk to first, which initially seems like a positive for the former United midfielder.

Carrick is rightly considered the frontrunner for the position, even if United fans are mixed on whether he is the right man to bring Premier League success back to Old Trafford.

In Carrick’s 15 games in charge, United have won 10 and drawn three.

No talks arranged with other candidates for Man Utd job

It could be telling that United have not arranged talks with other candidates for the job.

Well, it could be revealed at a later point that they have, which would suggest Carrick has more competition than many would have thought, as Enrique sounds committed to Paris Saint-Germain.

That means Carrick has at least two matches left as interim head coach to prove himself, although many would argue he’s proven enough by securing a spot in the Champions League.

Carrick could be on the verge of landing his dream job permanently. He deserves the utmost credit for that.
