One Manchester United star earned a spot in the Premier League Team of the Week despite suffering defeat.
Ruben Amorim’s struggles in the Premier League continued on Sunday afternoon with Manchester United losing 1-0 to Tottenham.
Seven academy stars featured on the bench against Spurs after United were stung by an injury crisis throughout the week.
United’s defensive options were thinned after Lisandro Martinez suffered an ACL injury and Leny Yoro was ruled out with an illness.
Amorim started Noussair Mazraoui at centre-back, alongside Harry Maguire and summer signing Matthijs de Ligt. The latter put on an impressive display in North London.

Matthijs de Ligt stars for Man United vs Tottenham
James Maddison scored the only goal of the game to give Spurs a crucial win, but United could – and should – have rescued some points if they took their chances.
De Ligt refused to use injuries as an excuse, explaining that United still had an XI of senior first-team players start the match.
The 25-year-old was one of United’s best players against Spurs, and he earned a spot in WhoScored’s Team of the Week despite tasting defeat.
De Ligt earned a 7.79 rating for his performance, earning him a spot in defence alongside Southampton’s Jan Bednarek.
They added: “The Dutchman made three tackles, four blocks, seven clearances and two interceptions, while he also won all seven of the duels he contested.”
Matthijs de Ligt silences his critics
De Ligt has been a reliable figure for United since completing his £42m move from Bayern Munich in the summer.
However, United legend Paul Scholes has not been convinced by De Ligt since his arrival in Manchester.
Scholes said De Ligt is not good enough to start for United, with Leny Yoro the only “untouchable” out of United’s defenders.
Lisandro Martinez hit back at Scholes last week, suggesting the United legend is being overcritical.
The legendary United midfielder has been one of De Ligt’s biggest critics since his move, but the Dutch defender did his talking on the pitch on Sunday afternoon.
On another day, Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee take their chances and United leave London with all three points. United’s poor finishing should not take away from the plaudits that De Ligt deserves.
