Luis Suarez enduring worst goalscoring drought since joining Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are in the midst of their poorest run of form under Diego Simeone as they gear up to face Manchester United in the Champions League last-16.

Following Los Colchoneros’ 2-1 defeat at Sevilla on Saturday, the reigning La Liga champions have lost three straight top-flight matches, under the Argentine for the first time, during his 10-year tenure at the club.

Currently outside the Champions League places, La Liga’s reigning champions are 14 points behind their great rivals Real Madrid after 17 matches.

With Atletico, Barcelona and Villarreal all experiencing their own individual struggles, Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano are currently in La Liga’s top four alongside Real Madrid and Sevilla.

Following the Champions League last-16 re-draw, United will renew acquaintances with former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan forward has already given his reaction to the draw and how his side will have to be wary of Cristiano Ronaldo.

But unlike United’s number seven, the 34-year-old is in the midst of a frustrating spell in front of goal.

After scoring 21 La Liga goals last season which fired Atletico to the title, Suarez has just seven goals to his name, across all competitions, so far this season. Whereas Ronaldo has 13 goals to his name.

Suarez hasn’t scored in his last five La Liga matches, which is his longest drought since joining Atletico from Barcelona.

Atletico’s number nine was furious when he was replaced just before the hour mark at the the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, on Saturday night.

But the man who turns 35 in January didn’t register a shot on goal against Sevilla, according to SofaScore.

It will be interesting to see whether he starts Wednesday’s clash against Granada following his outburst in Seville.

With United not facing Atletico until February, things could quickly change for Atletico and Suarez, but as it stands the La Liga giants are experiencing problems.
