Joe Hugill makes Carlisle United debut, manager gives verdict on Man Utd loanee’s performance

Manchester United youngster Joe Hugill sealed another loan move last week, and went straight into his new team’s starting line-up.

Joe Hugill saw his loan spell at Wigan Athletic cut short, with the Latics citing a ‘budget’ decision, looking to bring in a different profile of player.

Hugill scored five goals for Wigan in total, with his spell interrupted by injury. It wasn’t a bad thing for him to get a fresh start, after losing his place as a starter.

The young striker signed a loan deal with League Two side Carlisle United, a new opportunity that he is keen to make the most of.

Joe Hugill gets started at Carlisle

The Manchester United loanee went straight into Carlisle’s January 18 fixture against Bradford City, starting in the home fixture.

Joe Hugill’s side fell to a 1-0 home defeat, yet there was one positive to take amid the disappointing loss.

Hugill played all 90 minutes for Carlisle, something he did in the league only twice for Wigan, the last time on September 14.

The United youngster had two shots on target, and Carlisle coach Mike Williamson was pleased with his performance, pointing out that his teammates need to help him out more.

Williamson told Carlisle’s website: “Joe put in a real shift and you could see he’s threatening.

“He’s going to get goals when he gets chances. So, we’d need to create more clear-cut.”

It was a positive verdict on the 21-year-old, who will be desperate to turn this loan spell into a big success story, after a lukewarm return at Wigan.

Joe Hugill signing excites Carlisle

Carlisle were pleased to win the race to land Joe Hugill, who is on the fourth loan spell of his young career, following a stint with Burton Albion in the second half of 2023/24.

The previous season he had a short loan at non-league Altrincham, alongside Poland international Maxi Oyedele.

Williamson said upon completing the loan: “We are delighted to have been able to bring Joe in. He’s somebody who we have been pursuing for a while.

“He gives us pace and power, and he’ll bring another dimension to our play.

“He’s got goals in him, so we’re delighted he’s chosen to come to us.”
