Joe Cole has now spotlighted something that he noticed about Michael Carrick after playing alongside the Manchester United legend for both club and country.

Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford last month and the 44-year-old Manchester United legend will see out the remainder of the season as interim head coach.

The former Middlesbrough head coach has made a stunning start since his appointment, with United picking up four Premier League wins and a draw so far.

Carrick kicked off his interim head coach reign with huge wins against Manchester City and Arsenal in January before victories over Fulham and Tottenham this month.

The former Red Devils and England midfielder avoided the first defeat under his tenure on Tuesday evening after Man Utd’s late equaliser against West Ham.

Michael Carrick has put Manchester United into the Premier League top-four picture after the Red Devils’ superb turnaround in form in recent weeks.

Speaking on the ‘Could It Be Magic?’ podcast, the 44-year-old ex-West Ham midfielder admitted United fans might not have picked up on Carrick’s “steeliness.”

“We’ll quickly flip it on to Michael Carrick now, who we’ve all played with,” he said.

“I’ve played with him a lot; I came through with him [at West Ham]. What I would say people don’t know about Michael is there’s a steeliness to him.”

“He’s not a ranter and raver,” he explained.

“He doesn’t say nothing. He’s the quiet one. And when he speaks, he speaks and he’s measured.

“And I was really happy for him in the derby. It was fantastic. But I never saw that coming, to be honest.”

Carrick has 12 Premier League matches remaining in his interim head coach reign amid Ineos’ pursuit of Ruben Amorim’s long-term permanent successor.
