Jamie Carragher has revised his Premier League prediction for Manchester United in the 2024-25 campaign after the arrival of Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

Manchester United endured a disastrous start to the 2024-25 season under Erik ten Hag, who was sacked by the Premier League club in late October.

The Red Devils were left in 14th place in the league table at the time of Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, with United managing only three wins in nine league matches.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was appointed Ten Hag’s assistant manager in the summer, took over as interim manager at United until the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

The 48-year-old United legend won three matches and picked up one draw across all competitions during his four-match interim spell at Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy left the Premier League club at the start of the November international break after Amorim didn’t retain him for his coaching staff.

Amorim agreed to succeed Ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout earlier this month after United triggered the £9.25m release clause in his Sporting CP contract.

Carragher makes new Man Utd prediction

Manchester United have only slightly improved their standing in the Premier League table since the sacking of former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils are now 12th in the Premier League table and United are six points adrift from the top four after 12 matches played this season.

Following Ten Hag’s departure, Ruud van Nistelrooy led United to a 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford before a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

Ruben Amorim collected his first Premier League point after the November break following United’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road last week.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher revealed that his initial prediction was that United would finish fifth in the Premier League table this season.

However, the Sky Sports pundit has now walked back on his “biggest mistake” and is now convinced that United will finish outside of the top six.

“Now in fifth place, this is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my predictions,” Carragher said.

“I put Manchester United in fifth position. I don’t think there is a chance Manchester United finish in fifth position.

“I would be very surprised if they finish in the top six. I can’t really see that happening.”

Carragher on failed Man Utd prediction and Ten Hag

Carragher has now backed Tottenham to finish in fifth place instead of United, with the Liverpool legend sharing his two cents on his initial prediction for the Red Devils.

The ex-Liverpool and England defender felt that Ten Hag might have made United a “lot more competitive” and “overestimated” how well they would do this season.

“So, I’m going to go with Tottenham,” Carragher said.

“I’ve said Tottenham will just miss out on the Champions League positions with Chelsea going in there.

“I’m now gonna put Tottenham in fifth position because I just think they haven’t got the players, the quality.

“I thought Ten Hag may have a chance of almost taking them back to where they were in his first season, making them a lot more competitive. They spent £180m in the summer as well.

“But no, I overestimated how they would do, Manchester United. And it’s one that I’m glad to get wrong.”
