Paul Pogba’s potential at Manchester United has not quite been fulfilled.

But he has got a lot closer than former FA Youth Cup winning teammate Ravel Morrison did.

One youngster who played alongside both of them was Jack Barmby, son of former England international Nick Barmby. He believes Morrison was right up there with Pogba, and ahead of him at times.

Now 25, Jack Barmby is playing in America and has just signed for Phoenix Rising.

As a teenager for a brief moment when he was with the under-18s, he looked like he might have the ability to make it at United, but his star quickly faded, and he has been in the lower leagues and in America ever since.

Speaking to World Football Index, Barmby talked up Ravel Morrison as being up there with the very best he has seen or played with.

Barmby said: “Everyone talks about Ravel Morrison and it is true what everyone says. Ability wise he was absolutely phenomenal.

“Probably at points during the academy, better than Paul Pogba, and it was a shame to see his ability not reach its potential.”

Morrison was sold by Sir Alex Ferguson to West Ham, and he has not been able to hit the heights expected of him.

He is currently at Sheffield United, where he has played just one Premier League game this season as a substitute.

Barmby, a former England under-20 international, had positive words to say about current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He said: “Solskjaer was the reserve team manager at the time and we would train with him on a daily basis. He would take time out to do finishing practices with the young players which was an invaluable experience.”

It is tough for young players to make the jump from the academy to the first team.

The way Morrison and Barmby both failed to kick on shows how fortunate United are to having Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams excelling at the moment.

Hopefully a couple more will be able to make the jump and establish themselves before the season is over.
