Harry Maguire roars he is ready to deliver ‘big season’ for Manchester United, gives fitness update

Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is looking forward to playing a big part at the club this season.

Maguire, 31, started Manchester United’s opener against Fulham and produced a battling performance where he saved the team on a couple of occasions.

We felt Maguire was the under rated hero of United’s win, who desvered more credit than he received.

Indeed, the debate is already beginning over whether new signing Matthijs de Ligt should replace him against Brighton this weekend.

Harry Maguire hopes for the season ahead

With two big money centre-backs signed, plus Lisandro Martinez returning from injury, questions have been asked over Maguire.

But if last season’s injury problems taught United anything, it is that depth is required in all positions, especially defence.

Maguire spoke to United’s club website to express his sentiments about the upcoming campaign.

He said: “I feel good, I feel fit. Physically and mentally, I’m in a good place and yeah, I’m looking forward to a big season. 

“There’s so many games this season. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of changes to come, game to game, in the starting eleven. And when your turn is upon you, you need to take your chance. And yeah, it’s one that we’ll need a big squad for.

“For myself, I feel fit and ready to go and looking forward to the season.”

Maguire will get games

With new signing Leny Yoro already injured, Harry Maguire has been given increased chance of game time to kick off the season.

Matthijs de Ligt is also working his way up to match fitness, leading to Maguire getting the nod in the season opener.

There will be plenty of games to go around, especially with United needing to manage Martinez carefully, and the need to rotate with the Europa League.

Maguire ended last season injured and missed the FA Cup Final and Euro 2024, a cruel personal blow to a defender who has given everything for club and country.

He has now picked himself up and is ready to go again in 2024/25. He says he is now physically and mentally in a good place, which is good to hear, and United need players with his attitude in the squad, who are keen to maximise their minutes and take the chances he is given.
