Dean Henderson’s on and off appearance at Manchester United training this summer has been explained by the club.

United confirmed Henderson has been left fatigued by a bout of Covid, three weeks after first returning to training at the start of July.

Henderson has missed out on the club’s second mini-training camp of the summer and now looks unlikely to start the opening match of the season against Leeds, with David de Gea now back.

The goalkeeper has the support of his colleagues, with Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay wishing Henderson a swift recovery.

Henderson’s fitness blow is a big blow to his hopes of starting the season as Manchester United number one.

The club website statement read: “He is expected to be training again soon,” while not putting any specific timeframe upon his return.

David de Gea is with the first team currently on a training camp in Scotland, with Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.

United had a better win percentage in Premier League games Henderson started last season than De Gea.
