Why Man United’s quiet midfield rebuild is actually bad news for academy stars like Jim Thwaites

Manchester United headed into the summer transfer window with fans anticipating a big midfield rebuild.

The deal for Ederson is now off and United only have a move for Andrey Santos secured.

It has only been three weeks since the summer window opened, but United’s rivals are moving quickly. Tottenham won the race for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while top target Elliot Anderson is joining Manchester City in a record £130 million deal.

United are now moving onto alternative targets, but already, fans are feeling let down after being promised a ‘big window’.

Man United’s academy stars could hurt from transfer failure

On paper, a quiet summer window for United should present more opportunities to youngsters coming through the ranks at Carrington.

That certainly could be the case, especially for exciting midfield talents like Jim Thwaites and Tyler Fletcher.

But context is important, and Ineos using academy stars to paper over their failure this summer could cause serious harm.

United are competing in four competitions next season, so Carrick needs depth.

As things stand, the likes of Thwaites and Fletcher could get plenty of minutes, but in an extremely difficult environment. There would be huge pressure on teenagers who are yet to even establish themselves in the first team.

A lack of signings means there is also a startling lack of role models for them to follow in midfield. They would likely be partnering 21-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who while experienced, should still be considered a young player himself.

Fans will start the season frustrated at the transfer business, and it will unfairly be up to academy players to try and turn the tide.

Jim Thwaites and Tyler Fletcher need to be handled properly

United have some extremely exciting midfield prospects ready to make their breakthrough, but throwing them in the deep-end is not the answer.

Mainoo speaks highly of Casemiro as a role model, and the Brazilian deserves credit for passing on his wisdom and knowledge to United’s youth.

According to reports, United will promote an academy midfielder next season, but it is up to the recruitment team to make sure they enter a strong environment.

Young players are typically not consistent, and shouldn’t be expected to be.

Ineos have no excuses, midfield signings are needed, and ideally players who have experience and leadership.
