Hannibal’s weekend return suggests Christian Eriksen could make swift Manchester United comeback

Only four teams remain in the World Cup as the tournament in Qatar reaches it’s final stages.

Players who featured in the competition are already making their return to their clubs – and the big question where Manchester United are concerned, is when will they be back?

United have two fixtures now upcoming to target – the Carabao Cup tie with Burnley on December 21, and the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest on December 27, both at Old Trafford.

The two friendly defeats against Cadiz and Real Betis showed United need a bit more quality brought back into the squad as soon as possible.

Positive sign over Christian Eriksen comeback

One player we hope can make a very swift return is Christian Eriksen, who leads United for assists this season with six.

There was a positive sign for this at the weekend when Hannibal Mejbri made his return to action as a starter for Birmingham City – he was even praised for his excellent performance by his manager.

The Manchester United loanee’s involvement in the Championship clash was notable, as his Tunisia side were eliminated from the World Cup on the same day as Christian Eriksen’s Denmark – back on November 30.

Eriksen did see more playing time at the tournament, he started all three games – Hannibal only played 10 minutes in Qatar by comparison.

Nevertheless, it is not unreasonable to suggest that with an extra 10 days, Eriksen could be ready to start – or be on the bench, when United host Burnley in the Carabao Cup.

Quarter-final exits help United too

A host of United players were eliminated in the World Cup quarter-finals at the weekend.

Tyrell Malacia with Netherlands, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw with England, and Casemiro, Fred and Antony with Brazil.

It is not impossible any of these players make a very quick return in time for the Carabao Cup tie. Erik ten Hag has made clear he expects his World Cup stars to contribute right away.

If the cup tie is too soon, then it is at least very likely they are available for the league game against Forest on the 27th.

Only Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, into the semi-finals, may be excused.
