Getafe president Angel Torres insists Mason Greenwood is ‘crazy’ about staying in La Liga while indicating that Barcelona may be a fitting destination for the Manchester United and Premier League loanee.
While Sir Jim Ratcliffe appeared to suggest earlier this week that the Mason Greenwood saga is not quite over just yet – a new boadroom at Old Trafford means ‘fresh decisions’ will have to be made – the common consensus remains that the England international is unlikely to ever pull on that famous red shirt ever again.
Manchester United, according to reports, plan to cash in this summer. They hope to bring in around £34 million worth of ‘pure profit’, which would go a long way to easing those Financial Fair Play concerns.
Manchester United likely to sell Mason Greenwood
The chances of Getafe striking a permanent deal for a player who has been such a hit on loan in the capital look slim, to say the least. Getafe’s current record signing – the now-Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella – cost around £25 million less than Man United reportedly want for Greenwood.
But with the forward seemingly keen on extending his stay in Spain, and with admirers at Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and co, Torres feels that Greenwood could be tearing up La Liga turf again in 2024/25.
“He is calm. He is very comfortable. He’s crazy about staying another year,” Torres tells Radio Cope.
“It is an issue that (Manchester United) have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to say (what decision they are making).
“In Spain, there is a market. They have money. Barca’s way of playing (suits Greenwood) well, but it depends on Manchester United. If it is true (that they want to sell), they will tell me about it.”
Greenwood is averaging a goal or an assist every other game in La Liga (10 G/A in 21 matches). He was hailed by none other than Antoine Griezmann after one particularly thrilling display against Atletico in December.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keen
HITC Football transfer insider Graeme Bailey, meanwhile, tells United In Focus that Ratcliffe’s midweek comments may have been made in an attempt to raise Greenwood’s value, in an attempt to eke maximum value out of a potentially £35 million-plus asset.
“From a transfer business standpoint, Manchester United are pleased with Ratcliffe’s comments,” Bailey explains. “It puts them in great negotiating position.
“Barcelona and Atletico thought they could low ball them, as they thought Manchester United didn’t want him back now.
“Now United are positioning themselves to suggest ‘we will take him back’, which strengthens their hand for a higher fee.”
