Gary Neville says Manchester United’s players should be ashamed, and De Gea gives verdict

Manchester United dropped more points in the race for the top four, this time at home to Southampton.

United gave up a 1-0 lead for the third successive game, and looked more and more dispirited and out of ideas as the game went on.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl spoke after the 1-1 draw and said one of Manchester United’s flaws is an open secret.

Hasenhuttl was quoted by Talksport: “It’s not a big secret that when they lose the ball the reverse gears are not the best from everyone,

United’s midfield were slow in tracking back at certain points, and there was one stage in the second half where Harry Maguire gave the ball away and looked to be running through treacle as he chased back.

Former defender Gary Neville reacted to Hasenhuttl’s comments and suggested United’s players should feel ashamed hearing the criticism.

Players frustrated

United are now three games without a win, which includes a cup exit. A top four spot looks a lot less likely after these crucial dropped points in the last two league matches.

United goalkeeper David de Gea posted to social media after the result and he made clear his frustration with the result and performance.

The problem with De Gea’s comments, and this is no individual critique of him, it’s that words like this from United’s players ring hollow right now.

United fans have been reading apology notes on social media and messages like De Gea’s since September, and nothing changes.

The worst aspect of Saturday’s draw with Southampton was that the draw was a complete repeat of the Burnley and Middlesbrough games. It is like no lessons have been learned.

United have another tough game against Brighton on Tuesday, before Leeds away on Sunday.
