Gary Lineker says two Manchester United players must step up in the Premier League

Manchester United have been toothless in the Premier League this season, now two players have been told they need to do more.

Erik ten Hag will have been desperately disappointed with what he’s seen from his forwards this season thus far. Out of a long list of those playing in attacking positions only one goal has been scored in the Premier League.

Marcus Rashford‘s solitary striker against Arsenal is the only league goal contributed by a winger or striker in the Premier League thus far. When you realise that, it’s easy to see why the results at Manchester United have been so utterly hopeless for most of the season.

Take for example, the last Old Trafford outing against Luton Town which saw United win 1-0, however, they had the opportunities needed to have easily won by four.

Rasmus Hojlund had two, Rashford had one and Alejandro Garnacho also had one.

Now, ahead of a crucial period of the season, United need these frontmen to stand up and begin converting. This sentiment has been shared by Gary Lineker who has called for two of United’s front three to improve.

Lineker calls for United duo to improve

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast on Friday, England legend Gary Lineker explained that United need someone to start scoring goals before calling for two players to step up.

“Rashford needs to find his form, Hojlund needs to start showing his promise in terms of numbers certainly in the Premier League, he’s done really well in the Champions League.”

Rashford has been well below standards this season so far, however, as we know he can find his form and become unstoppable from that point onwards.

Meanwhile, Hojlund has already shown he has the goalscorer’s touch in the Champions League which makes his struggles domestically baffling.

Only a matter of time until both are firing

Despite it currently feeling like a huge concern, which is understandable, the general consensus is that Hojlund will eventually start scoring, and Rashford will be back to his electrifying best.

This Sunday’s trip to Goodison Park against an Everton side who are sure to be hyped up following their 10-point deduction earlier this week, which has many United fans concerned.

Sean Dyche notoriously sets his side up in a manner which is tough to attack against, but desperate for points and with the fans behind him, we could be in store for an absolute cracker of a game.

Hojlund could be missing for the game which will be a blow, but Rashford should be in the team and his talents will be needed, hopefully, he can kick-start his season.
