Former Manchester United youngster D’Mani Mellor has signed for a new club as a free agent, with the transfer window closed.

After two seasons in the Football League following his 2022 release by Manchester United, D’Mani Mellor once again found himself without a club this summer.

As a free agent, Mellor was able to extend his search beyond the transfer window, and has now secured a deal at Northern Premier League side Macclesfield Town.

Macclesfield are currently being managed by former Manchester United trainee and ex-Premier League player Robbie Savage.

It is a long way down the football pyramid for Mellor, with Macclefield three rungs below League Two.

Mellor overcame injury nightmare

A once promising Manchester United prospect at academy level, Mellor made his one and only appearance for the Red Devils first team in the Europa League against Astana.

Mellor suffered a torn ACL at the start of the 2020/21 season which required two operations.

After returning at the start of 2021 to feature for the under-21s, he went on loan to Salford City in League Two, but barely played. He was recalled and scored a handful of goals at academy level but ended up being released in summer 2022.

Mellor’s two years since leaving United

D’Mani Mellor signed with League One side Wycombe Wanderers, with then manager Gareth Ainsworth commenting: “He is an exciting prospect but to be at Man United for so long show his calibre and shows what he is all about. He is going to be an exciting, attacking prospect for us.”

Mellor scored early on in his spell in a Carabao Cup win over Northampton, but beyond that, his debut season proved difficult.

Mellor made only nine League One appearances, just one as a starter, before being loaned out to Rochdale. He featured more frequently, 19 times, yet failed to score.

Last season Mellor went on loan to Sutton United, also failing to score, before rejoining Rochdale, who had since been relegated to the National League. He did get on the scoresheet this time, but only netted once.

Wycombe released Mellor in the summer and now 23, he has got his fresh start, dropping down a few more divisions.
