D'Mani Mellor is leaving Manchester United, confirms exit via Instagram
D’Mani Mellor is leaving Manchester United, confirming his exit from the club via Instagram.
The 21-year-old striker departs, with one first team appearance to his name.
Writing on social media, Mellor says he is excited for his ‘next step’ now as a free agent.
D’Mani Mellor is leaving Manchester United
The news D’Mani Mellor is leaving Manchester United is not a surprise. While a promising talent, he never really looked like making a first team push, despite a great attitude and some bright moments in the under-23s.
His career was set back by a ACL injury after the lockdown which caused him to miss the entire 2020/21 season, and required two operations.
He went on loan to Salford City in the first half of this season, but he wasn’t quite ready for regular football so early on in his recovery, and returned to Manchester United in January.
Mellor scored eight goals for the under-23s in the second half of the season, leading the line, while Charlie McNeill and Joe Hugill dropped down to the under-18s.
But now his contract is up and United chose not to renew it, a decision which is probably in the striker’s best interests too.
This strong run of form will help his efforts to land a club as a free agent. United could have done worse than turn to him on the bench as a back-up in recent weeks with Cavani out injured, but given that he was never in the club’s long-term plans, it wasn’t an option – although he was given the chance to train with the first team.
Now 21, Mellor turns 22 in September and needs regular first team football. A switch to a Football League club is likely, and he has a good chance of being a success.
His early message could even indicate he has another move lined up already, and he won’t be the only academy departure in the coming weeks.
