Former Man United man slammed as ‘flop of the season’ just months after being called ‘one of the best’

One former Manchester United figure has had a season to forget.

There is no doubt this has been an underwhelming season for Manchester United, with the Red Devils currently slumped down in 13th in the Premier League table.

However, there have been signs of progress under Ruben Amorim, and there is a bright future ahead for the club with new ownership and a new stadium completed by 2030.

One of Amorim’s first decisions when becoming United’s head coach was to let caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy leave rather than become part of his coaching staff.

Since then, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s season has not exactly gone to plan.

Ruud van Nistelrooy labelled ‘flop of the season’

After Erik ten Hag was sacked, Van Nistelrooy stepped in and impressed as United’s caretaker boss.

But Amorim decided against keeping him at Old Trafford so Van Nistelrooy joined Leicester City as manager in hopes of keeping them up in the Premier League.

But it certainly hasn’t panned out as he expected. Van Nistelrooy has only won two of his 18 games in charge of the Foxes. Van Nistelrooy has broken unwanted records as a manager this season.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Gabby Agbonlahor did not hold back in his assessment of Van Nistelrooy’s season.

“He’s definitely lost the changing room. That probably happened a couple of months ago. You look at Van Nistelrooy’s reign – 18 games, two wins, one draw, 15 losses.

“I could probably put him down as the flop of the season. That’s how bad he’s done. He’s made them worse.”

It is a vast difference from a few months ago, when Rio Ferdinand said Van Nistelrooy is “one of the best”.

Amorim’s decision to leave Van Nistelrooy has been justified, with the Portuguese coach keeping hold of the staff that helped him win titles in Sporting.

Ruud van Nistelrooy update on his future

With Leicester heading directly for relegation this season, there have been questions asked about Van Nistelrooy’s future as their manager.

After a miserable 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday evening, Van Nistelrooy spoke fairly ominously about his future.

As quoted by Manchester Evening News, Van Nistelrooy said: “I think for now, it’s been such a bad run, a bad run of games of not getting results and not being able to score goals, that for me it’s time to recover from this first before I can say anything else.

“The most important thing is the club and these players. That’s what I would say for now.”

At Carrington, United players admired Van Nistelrooy and he was clearly able to extract results from the squad.

Whether he remains in management or returns as a striker coach elsewhere is yet to be seen.
