Facundo Pellistri's international youth coach talks up his quality

Facundo Pellistri is hoping for a year of progression at Manchester United in 2021.

The young winger has made a bright start to his career with the under-23 side since signing in October. So far Pellistri has three goals and one assist in seven games.

His former youth coach Alejandro Garay spoke to ESPN about Pellistri’s qualities and potential. Garay helped his development at international level back at under-15 level.

Garay said: “He can play across the entire attack front, he is very good at one-on-one, which is what Europe wants. He felt very comfortable on the left side.”

He could be what United need

Pellistri’s versatility to play on both the right and left wing will help him get potential first team opportunities.

The assist he made at under-23 level against Tottenham came from the right, while he has shown a desire to get into a central position at times too, shown with his goal against City.

Garay believes it is Pellistri’s ability to take players on which makes him so valuable.

He said: “He creates the space because he is very good in the one-on-one game and that is worth a lot in football today, he must resolve some final aspects in decision-making.”

It almost goes without saying that decision making is an issue. It is for all young players and is something which improves with experience in match situations. Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s end product was a talking point during his early days at Old Trafford.

Pellistri is just 19 and has plenty of time to develop. The contract he signed at United runs through until 2026.

His first task will be to make his senior debut this coming year. There could be an early opportunity in the FA Cup against Watford on January 9.

United have lacked quality wing play in recent seasons, so it is good to see the club taking a chance on a young attacker like Pellistri. There could be a real opportunity for him to shine as he offers a different style.

His ability to retain possession is extremely good, which makes him less of a risk for Solskjaer to throw in.

United have been careful not to rush him in so far, and when he does get a chance, it will be when the coaching staff believe he is ready for the challenge.
