Key points
Manchester United are closing in on appointing Ruben Amorim as their next manager and the Sporting boss has addressed the links to Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday morning with Manchester United languishing down in 14th in the Premier League table after yet another defeat.
United have moved quickly to find their preferred replacement and have reached a verbal agreement with Ruben Amorim to be their next manager.
A compensation package with Sporting still needs to be agreed, though, but the Portuguese champions have publically confirmed United’s approach for Amorim.
The Sporting boss took charge of their 3-1 win over Nacional on Tuesday night and was asked about the speculation after the game.
Amorim said: “Nobody knows if it is a farewell game or if there will be a farewell. That is a matter that has not yet been decided.
“I have nothing to say. Anything I say will only create more noise, there is nothing concrete to say. When I have something concrete to say… There will be a statement, everyone will know. Apart from that, we still don’t know the details. We’ll see. Anything I say now will only fuel noise.
Everything I say now is noise. It will be up to me to decide and I will be here to take responsibility. Saying half-measures now doesn’t seem like the best thing to do.
Here are all the latest updates on United’s chase for Amorim ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City.

Speaking on TalkSport, Jeff Stelling voiced one concern over Ruben Amorim’s potential United appointment though it isn’t with the manager.
He said: “I spoke to some of my friends in Portugal and the biggest surprise to them is that Ruben Amorim is still managing there because he is so fantastic.
“He likes to press, he loves wingbacks, exclusively goes three-at-the-back, he can be pragmatic when required as well.
“So I’m not that worried about what’s at the top, the problem more for me, is what’s on the field…
“Has he got the players at Man United to succeed?
“Or is this just a mid-table side? Is that just how good Manchester United really are?”
