England star says ‘Harry Maguire stitched me up’ and tricked him into Robbie Williams duet

Premier League star James Maddison has told an amusing story of when Harry Maguire ‘stitched him up’ at the World Cup last year.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison gave an extended interview this week to former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster for Amazon Prime.

He talked of his admiration for Manchester United all time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, and how he was a Manchester United fan growing up.

Now a rival, Maddison is close to many of his England teammates, including his ex-Leicester City pal Harry Maguire, a key defender at Mancheser United this season.

James Maddison duet with Robbie Williams

James Maddison explained how pop star Robbie Williams came to entertain the squad ahead of the World Cup, and he ended up on stage alongside him, all thanks to Harry Maguire.

Maddison explained: “Robbie came and did a set for us in Qatar… he says ‘stop the set, I’ve heard James Maddison’s got a bit…’

“And I’m just at the back like still tucking into my chicken or whatever I’m eating, thinking ‘did I hear that right?’

“I’ve heard he can seriously sing’ and I can’t sing I promise you now I can’t sing, and Harry Maguire has stitched me up and told Robbie that I’m really good at signing like genuinely good at singing.

“So he called me up for a duet, I’m like at the back like ‘Robbie I’m rubbish you can’t get me up’ and the lads are like Madders come on don’t turn down a duet with Robbie, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount are there like ‘you got to go up’, and I’m walking up like ‘what’s going on here’.

“I ended up doing a duet with Robbie at the front, Sweet Caroline, I’ve got a video I’ll show you after. I hit the first note pretty well and it went downhill from there, he must have been thinking ‘Harry Maguire is having me on here because he’s awful’, but you can’t take that away from me I did a duet with Robbie Williams.”

A side you don’t see to Harry Maguire

This is a more playful side of Harry Maguire you often don’t see. In his interviews he is so deadpan serious, media trained, and at Manchester United he always seems like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

He recently responded in good spirits to a Ghanaian MP who had mocked him last year, and then apologised after seeing his excellent form in 2023/24.

Maguire will be keen to have the last laugh again when he takes on Maddison’s Tottenham later this season, having missed out on selection for the first match in August.
