Manchester United have strong interest in Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, report The Mail.
Camavinga is a player with huge potential, playing two full seasons in Ligue 1 at just 18. He has already represented France.
While just a teenager, Camavinga already measures up well from his performances in Ligue 1.
Outstanding tackler
Camavinga causes a problem for opponents and is not afraid to get stuck in.
He attempted 111 tackles in 2020/21, the joint fourth highest in Ligue 1.
Camavinga won 70 tackles in total, the seventh highest in the division. His rate of success will improve as gets older and gets stronger and wiser.
For context, the 70 tackles won by Camavinga betters all Manchester United players in the Premier League last season.
Notably the 70 tackles won is more than Aaron Wan-Bissaka (52), Fred (55), and Luke Shaw (44).
Camavinga’s pressing game is also strong, with an average of 22.55 pressures per 90 last season.
Strong on the ball
One of Camavinga’s other strengths is his ability to dribble through midfield.
Data from FBRef.com shows Camavinga completed an average of 1.98 dribbles per game. This ranks inside the top five per cent of players in his position in Europe’s top leagues.
His progressive carrying distance ranked inside the top six per cent, helping his team move up the pitch.
Camavinga completed 89.5 per cent of his passes last season, and also ranked inside the top two per cent of players for completing long passes.
In terms of passing forward, Camavinga ranked inside the top 20 per cent of passes into the final third, with an average of 5.6 per game.
Weaknesses
One of the strong features of Camavinga’s game is, as above, his ability to run with the ball.
This has the effect of taking him out of position, and he is not the typical defensive midfielder Manchester United require.
Camavinga is more of a Paul Pogba replacement, and United have to decide whether he should be a priority – which may depend on Pogba’s immediate future – or if a ‘DM’ should be signed.
As a result of his forays forward, Camavinga is not sitting back reading the game looking to cut out attacks. He relies on competing and making tackles, as opposed to being one step ahead.
Camavinga’s interception numbers are low, ranking inside the bottom 13 per cent of midfield players across Europe’s top leagues. He averages 0.76 per game.
When it comes to scoring goals from midfield, Camavinga is more Fred than Fernandes.
He has netted just two goals for Rennes in 82 matches, and while there is plenty of time to develop this side of his game, at present he is near enough a non-factor in goalscoring terms.
