Manchester United have youth development at the forefront of the team’s plans for the future, and that has been evident on tour.

Erik ten Hag named 12 academy youngsters on tour without a first team start to their name. This was emblematic of the club’s commitment to youth development.

Manchester United have one of the world’s best academies, which is an asset when it comes to recruiting top young players.

One of those on tour is Harry Amass, who signed from Watford just one year ago, aged just 16.

Harry Amass steps up

Harry Amass was one of the best players for Manchester United’s all-conquering under-18s side in 2023/24.

He has seized his chance on tour, starting all three matches in the USA in the left-back spot, which has been a problem position for the club due to injuries.

Amass has shown promise during his performances. He made three successful tackles against Liverpool during his 73 minutes, the joint-highest of all players on the pitch.

He also created two goalscoring chances, showing the quality going forward which helped him stand out at youth level.

There have been some tricky moments too, but this experience will stand Amass in good stead for the future, valuable experience for the 17-year-old, who Erik ten Hag hopes will follow Kobbie Mainoo’s path.

Amass sent out a message on Instagram with a collection of pictures showcasing his first team involvement in the US.

Amass shows way to Obi-Martin

Many Manchester United teammates from the tour and academy replied to Harry Amass’ message, expressing their respect for the youngster.

And intriguingly, there was a response from Chido Obi-Martin, the prolific teenage striker who has quit Arsenal to join Manchester United.

Obi-Martin left a ‘fire’ emoji in reply to Amass’ message. The young striker is set to undergo a medical to complete his move to Manchester United.

Harry Amass was tempted by Manchester United’s first team pathway when he made the decision to sign for the club last summer.

The England youth international has put himself in the mix as cover for Luke Shaw, and there is reason to believe he could emulate the former Southampton man.

Obi-Martin has also been tempted by Manchester United’s record of flooding first team prospects, vastly superior to Arsenal.

Obi-Martin could end up as United’s third-choice striker next season. It would not be a surprise to see him make his first team debut in 2024/25, despite his young age.

After scoring 32 goals for Arsenal’s under-18s last season, he is regarded as one of the best strike prospects in Europe, and his signing is a real coup for United.
