All 12 Man Utd academy prospects to watch out for in the USA Tour 2024 squad

Manchester United have announced the full squad for the US tour with 29 players flying out for the three friendly matches.

Due to the Euros and Copa America, Manchester United’s USA tour squad is supplemented by 12 up and coming academy players.

We have not included Hannibal Mejbri and Amad Diallo in this list, players who have two or three years experience now of playing first team football, only players who have not started a competitive game for the club.

The 12 players below have a combined 10 minutes playing time for Manchester United between them at competitive level. Here is a look at everything you need to know…

Radek Vitek

What can we expect from Radek Vitek… Radek Vitek is an absolute man mountain of a goalkeeper, who was man of the match in the friendly against Rosenborg.

Vitek has been compared to Peter Schmeichel, and his dominance of the penalty box and large frame makes it easy to see why.

He has clearly benefitted from a loan at Accrington last year. For this tour, Vitek will be third choice behind Andre Onana and Tom Heaton, which makes playing time unlikely.

The tour will allow United to assess Vitek more closely, before he likely heads out on loan for a new challenge.

Dermot Mee

What can we expect from Dermot Mee… Dermot Mee will be Manchester United’s fourth goalkeeper on the tour and is not expected to see any game time.

The 21-year-old has had a variety of loans at non-league clubs and he will want to set himself up for the season ahead, whether that is another loan, or as an emergency back-up.

Harry Amass

What can we expect from Harry Amass… Manchester United have no senior left-back on tour so there is a real opportunity for Harry Amass to impress.

He was a second half substitute in both pre-season games. Amass was particularly impressive against Rangers, where he won more duels and completed more dribbles than any player on the pitch.

Amass is only in his second season at United following his move from Watford a year earlier. He was one of the outstanding players in the academy last season.

A potential successor to Luke Shaw long-term, United fans have even compared Amass to a young Gareth Bale. He is the second youngest player included in this tour group.

Rhys Bennett

What can we expect from Rhys Bennett… Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup winning captain, Rhys Bennett had a tough 2023 with injury.

Bennett was called into the United squad in late 2022 by Erik ten Hag, before an injury. He was then due to travel on tour last year, getting injured again. United then signed Jonny Evans as cover.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Stockport but was mainly a back-up. The young centre-back will want to make an impression and demonstrate the potential which made him a standout option.

With Willy Kambwala now sold, there is room for a young defender to step up and Bennett will be glad to get his chance if it comes. Simply being on tour is progress.

Will Fish

What can we expect from Will Fish… A starter against Rosenborg and substitute against Rangers, Will Fish has proven a dependable option at the back during the last two pre-seasons.

Fish has spent the last two seasons on loan at Hibernian, where he has been a regular. He should see some minutes on tour, but where it leads is another question.

Whatever happens on tour, the most likely outcome is that Fish ends up being loaned or sold, rather than integrated into the first team this season. He will have a chance to try and change that outlook.

Fish is one of two players in this list with first team appearance to his name, a late substitute against Wolves in 2021.

Sam Murray

What can we expect from Sam Murray… Sam Murray has been one of the surprises of pre-season so far.

An FA Youth Cup winning left-back, Murray has not quite kicked on as he would have hoped, but an opportunity has come his way with Luke Shaw not back, and Tyrell Malacia training alone at Carrington.

Murray has been preferred to Amass in both of the opening games and he has looked like he belonged, keeping a clean sheet in both halves of football he played.

With United looking for left-back cover, Murray like Amass has a chance to show why he should be the player Erik ten Hag turns to.

Toby Collyer

What can we expect from Toby Collyer... There are really high hopes for midfielder Toby Collyer, who impressed so much in the second half against Rosenborg that he was promoted to starter against Rangers ahead of Hannibal.

Collyer was sharp against Rangers too, recovering the ball quickly, showing some of what Manchester United missed last season.

The former Brighton academy talent has a genuine chance to make the Manchester United first team squad for 2024/25.

Now up against tougher opposition in Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool, Collyer will need to show he looks the part, like he did in the two early friendlies.

Jack Fletcher

What can we expect from Jack Fletcher... One of Darren Fletcher’s two twin sons, Jack Fletcher is on his first pre-season tour. Tyler Fletcher was in action for the under-21s against Chester earlier this week.

Jack Fletcher was born three days after Harry Amass and he is the youngest player on the plane to the USA.

He made an immediate impression for United’s academy teams last season, demonstrating his playmaking ability and confidence running with the ball.

Fletcher is likely going to be limited to substitute appearances rather than starting roles, but he will be keen to show he can contribute. He featured in both pre-season games so far.

Sam Mather

What can we expect from Sam Mather... Another key player in the FA Youth Cup winning side in 2022, Sam Mather has had a tricky time with injuries since.

Mather scored four times in one game for the under-21s last season, including a stunning free-kick, and went on loan to Rochdale, where he scored twice.

Mather played in the second half against Rangers, and must have impressed, because he signed a new contract just earlier this week which runs to 2027, with an option of a further year.

Winger is a position where United have plenty of depth, so another loan move likely lies ahead for the England youth international.

Maxi Oyedele

What can we expect from Maxi Oyedele... Manchester United fans have already seen what Maxi Oyedele is capable of this pre-season.

Maxi Oyedele’s run and defence-splitting pass to set up Joe Hugill against Rangers was one of the highlights of the 2-0 win.

The Poland under-21 international is expected to head out on loan this season, but he has done enough to earn himself some game time against Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool at least.

James Scanlon

What can we expect from James Scanlon… James Scanlon is one of three 17-year-olds in the travelling group, and is United’s wildcard.

Scanlon can play across the midfield and attack and finished last season very strongly, ending with 11 goals and five assists in the academy.

He also has some unique experience too. James Scanlon is a senior Gibraltar international, starting against Scotland in a friendly at the start of June.

Ethan Wheatley

What can we expect from Ethan Wheatley… Along with Will Fish, Ethan Wheatley is one of two players on this list with first team minutes for Manchester United.

Wheatley became Manchester United’s 250th academy graduate when he made his debut at the end of last season.

He has started both games so far, seeing a shot cleared off the line against Rangers, and will see action on the tour.

The bad news is Rasmus Hojlund making the tour squad pushes him down the pecking order, but on the positive side, Joe Hugill’s loan to Wigan means United are short of strikers and means Wheatley will get his chances.

Wheatley struck 23 goals for United’s academy teams last season, and he has one mission, to leave the tour with at least one goal. Scoring against top opposition will give Erik ten Hag reason to trust him for the campaign ahead.
