Borussia Dortmund are ‘cautiously optimistic’ regarding the return of Jadon Sancho as negotiations continue with Premier League giants Manchester United, according to CEO Hans Joachim Watzke.

Borussia Dortmund were hoping that Jadon Sancho would link up with his former team mates during the club’s winter training camp in Marbella over the weekend. That didn’t happen.

Sancho is still stuck in England, with Sky Germany reporting that there are still I’s to be dotted and T’s to be crossed before the Manchester United misfit packs his bags and heads back to the club where he played comfortably the best football of his career.

There is still some confidence in the Dortmund camp, however, even if Watzke is reluctant to get too carried away and proclaim this a ‘done deal’.

Jadon Sancho set for Manchester United loan exit

“I am cautiously optimistic,” the CEO said, via Yahoo Sport, suggesting that it’s an issue in the Red Devils camp which is holding up the deal. “We want him to join us. But we are not yet at the stage where we can announce results.

“We’re not announcing any progress reports. The problem is no longer with us, we are in good dialogue with Manchester United.”

Sancho joined United in a £73 million deal during the summer of 2021, but has not come close to translating his often dazzling Bundesliga form into the Premier League.

The England international hasn’t featured under Erik ten Hag since the opening weeks of the current campaign either, following a bitter fall out between the player and the coach.

‘He is extremely talented’

“Personally, I would be extremely happy (if Sancho returns) because I think a lot of him,” Dortmund midfielder Emre Can tells Sky Germany. “And I believe that, if he comes, he will help us.

“I don’t know how far (the deal is down the line), or whether he’s coming or not coming. But it would definitely be nice if he came. He is a difference (making) player. He’s always good for a goal, he’s always good for an assist and he’ll definitely help us if he comes along.

“He is extremely talented, and is simply a difference player.”
