Bruno Fernandes has reacted to Manchester United’s massive decision to sack Ruben Amorim in January and replace him with Michael Carrick during the 2025-26 season.
The 31-year-old Manchester United captain had been playing deeper within the midfield under Ruben Amorim in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
Former United manager Amorim had been relying on Bruno Fernandes in the two-man midfield pivot alongside Casemiro ahead of being dismissed from his role.
Amorim’s abrupt Man Utd exit in 2026 paved the way for Michael Carrick to have a major impact on both the Red Devils and Fernandes during the current season.

Bruno Fernandes on the decisive Man Utd change after Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in the Old Trafford hot seat
Michael Carrick pivoted from Ruben Amorim’s contentious Manchester United tactical system and ‘unlocked’ Fernandes’ true potential in the final third at Old Trafford.
Fernandes was moved to the No 10 role under Carrick’s Man Utd tactics and the Red Devils skipper has netted three times and has eight assists in his last 10 matches.
The Portugal and Man Utd midfielder has enjoyed a sensational run of form in Carrick’s 10-match spell for the Red Devils so far since Amorim was axed by United.
Speaking to The Times, Fernandes has pointed out that Carrick’s reign has allowed United to now mount a real challenge for a Champions League qualification spot.
“Difficult to say because we changed manager[s],” he said.
“We were building something [under Ruben Amorim] and all of a sudden the club decided we need to change.
“And then with Michael [Carrick] we have this last spell where we’ve been great until now, with the opportunity of the Champions League next season.”

Bruno Fernandes says Man Utd must look beyond Michael Carrick’s immediate impact as interim head coach
Carrick has overseen seven Premier League wins from 10 matches ahead of the Red Devils’ latest encounter against Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
United are now tipped to finish inside the top four this season, but Fernandes has insisted that the Red Devils must step back and look at the campaign as a whole.
“If we finish the way we want to finish, it’s going to look very good, but it’s still not the picture we want,” Fernandes added.
“[Can we] be the team we’ve been in this spell, but for a full season? Because anyone can be good in spells. Being good in the whole season is much more difficult.
“That’s something we haven’t done since I’m here. We need that consistency. In a full league, every point matters. Every small detail will make a difference.”
United are third in the Premier League table and are level on points with fourth-place Aston Villa, but the Red Devils have a match in hand over Unai Emery’s men.
