So Harry Maguire finally scored a header from a corner. It was no coincidence that it was from a Bruno Fernandes delivery.

The new signing grew into the game at Stamford Bridge and already looks like a key part of United’s team.

That’s one more assist than Jesse Lingard in the Premier League this season, and Fred too, who will be cursing his luck Odion Ighalo could not convert on his debut after his pass through to him in injury time.

There’s no luck involved where Fernandes’ deliveries are concerned. Corner taking has been a problem for United for a while now.

We all remember the farce Phil Jones taking one under Louis van Gaal. At last, United have a player who can produce quality set pieces.

Fernandes’ creative side shines

Fernandes’ night could have been even better had his free-kick not rebounded from the post early in the second half.

The midfielder started the game slowly but really grew into it and is striking up an impressive link up with Fred.

Fernandes created three chances in total, the highest of any Manchester United player. This was an improvement on his first game, where he had five shots at goal against Wolves, but didn’t create any chances.

He made the most of the 54 touches he had, and was always looking to drive United forward.

Fernandes is a creative player, and will blossom at United over the course of his career. But it is his set pieces which are the big addition.

It has been a problem at United for years having no specialist dead ball expert, and his improvement in this area alone will make him worth the money.

Last summer after Portugal’s win over Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League, some United fans picked up on Fernandes’ set piece taking.

Thankfully the club eventually came to the right conclusion and brought him in. And he didn’t cost £100 million either.

For a price of just £47 million initially, the solution is finally here, and Harry Maguire became the first to profit last night.
