Manchester United are on a downward spiral right now with Bruno Fernandes among the only players who can hold his head high.

Things are not going to plan for Ruben Amorim, with the storm he is currently weathering at Manchester United worse than he would have ever considered.

After losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur, United sit 15th in the Premier League having lost three of the last five and two consecutive defeats without even scoring.

Poor finishing is one of the biggest contributing factors to these goal-scoring struggles United are facing right now, which will be frustrating for Amorim with Alejandro Garnacho missing two big chances. United have underperformed expected goals by 10.73 goals, as per Under Stat, which is the second most in the league this season.

It is clear United need a blockbuster summer with several signings already being eyed up to revamp a squad incapable of playing in this Amorim system. However there are a few players who deserve better from their teammates and will be here next season, Bruno Fernandes is one.

There are a lot of problems with the squad right now, which is arguably the weakest it has been over the past decade, but the club captain is not one of the issues.

Fernandes has looked exasperated at times in the midfield this season as his teammates time after time fail to finish chances, or at times even struggle to complete a pass.

Through these problems, Fernandes has still been impressive and has performed to a solid level while everything around him is on fire.

The United captain has created 53 chances and also has completed 52 tackles according to the Premier League website. Fernandes is the only player in Europe’s top five leagues to achieve this, according to Statman Dave, which speaks to the versatility and consistency of the Portuguese magician.

The frightening part of Fernandes’ performances is that he is doing this in a season where United are now 15th, so if Amorim gets things ticking we should be in for an even better version of Bruno as he matures.

In a team which is faltering right now, Fernandes’ qualities are almost wasted, but without him, the criminally low 15th place could be even worse.

Amorim has been slammed for his recent usage of Fernandes, which is no shock as the Portugal international was tasked with being a one-man midfield against Spurs – albeit this was due to injuries.

Fernandes has caught the eye when used deeper as he is winning over five duels per 90 and winning over 1.34 tackles per 90. However, asking Fernandes to do everything on his own is a disaster in the making.

Fernandes is United’s joint-top scorer with nine goals in all competitions already. His goal-scoring has been coupled with 12 assists.
