Of the many names Manchester United should consider for the defensive midfield position this summer, Aurelien Tchouameni could be a particularly astute choice.
Earlier this summer we profiled Tchouameni as a potential signing, looking at his outstanding season for Monaco.
United are yet to show an interest in the France under-21 international. Perhaps that may change after last night.
Tchouameni produced a man of the match performance in the Champions League qualifiers to lead Monaco to a 2-0 away victory over last season’s Europa League quarter-finalists Sparta Prague.
The 21-year-old scored Monaco’s opener, powering home a header from Aleksandr Golovin’s corner.
Tchouameni dominant for Monaco
Tchouameni’s first half goal was just part of his strong all-round display to help Monaco to a big win.
The midfielder won 10 duels, made 4 interceptions, won 3 tackles, and made a staggering 22 ball recoveries, per FotMob.
He also won 4 aerial duels, also creating one chance, and touching the ball 77 times in total.
It was the type of performance against a strong side which would make scouts sit up and take notice.
Which leads us to wonder whether Manchester United will have been watching?
The type of midfielder United need
Tchouameni would cost less than half the price of Declan Rice and has huge potential. He has the defensive ability United are looking for in a midfielder.
Last season Tchouameni won 97 tackles, per FBRef, the second highest in Ligue 1. His 64 interceptions was also the fourth highest in the division. He outranked Eduardo Camavinga in both categories.
Monaco are a selling club and will not be able to hang onto Tchouameni for long. If Manchester United do not move, there is a strong chance another Premier League club will.
United are yet to show their hand with regard to the midfielder the club want. The Guardian reported at the start of July that Eduardo Camavinga was a target, but these links have gone quiet. ESPN reported United have also held talks with representatives of Saul Niguez and Ruben Neves. But the choice of top target has yet to be made.
Tchouameni is well worthy of consideration and his performance last night in Prague was one which highlighted his quality.
