Arteta is 'hopeful' that Bukayo Saka will be fit to face Manchester United

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is “hopeful” that talented winger Bukayo Saka will be for fit the Gunners’ trip to Manchester United on Thursday night.

The 20-year-old limped off after opening the scoring against Newcastle at the Emirates on Saturday with a muscle injury.

However, the England international is expected to train with the rest of the team later today, according to the former Manchester City assistant manager.

“We have a doubt with Bukayo and a couple of other knocks from the weekend game, but today is a day to assess if they are ready,” said Arteta at his pre-match press conference, via BBC Sport.

“I am hopeful but we don’t know. Obviously it is a short turnaround and players have to be comfortable playing with a little injury so let’s see how he does in training today.”

Saka’s inclusion would be a big boost for an Arsenal side, who have lost just one of their last 10 Premier League games and sit outside the Champions League places only on goal difference.

After starting a number of games from the right-hand side recently, it will be interesting to see whether Saka comes up against Alex Telles or Luke Shaw, who has missed the last two games, following a head injury he sustained at Watford.

That decision will once again be left to Michael Carrick, who will take charge of the game at Old Trafford whilst newly-appointed interim boss Ralf Rangnick continues to work through visa details.

United haven’t beaten Arsenal in the league since April 2018 and have only scored one goal in the last five meetings between the sides.
