Alejandro Garnacho steps up

Alejandro Garnacho was excellent for Manchester United in the victory against Villa, coming close to ending the night with a hat-trick, seeing an early goal disallowed for being narrowly offside.

Garnacho, 19, put out a post-game message on Instagram expressing his delight at making a major contribution to the team.

He wrote: “Christmas Present, Reds!🙏🏾❤️🖤 No one deserves this more than our fans. We are Manchester United!”

This elicited a response from the Argentina FA’s official Instagram account, which had a simple yet effective reply, writing, ‘Wow’.

Garnacho a star of the future

Seeing this message will give Alejandro Garnacho a boost after he was omitted from the Argentina squad for the international matches in November.

Garnacho has three caps to date, enough to ensure he is locked into Argentina for the future and cannot switch to Spain.

Yet clearly Argentina see Garnacho as part of their short-term future as well as long-term, paying close attention to his progress, with the World Cup qualifiers underway.

World Cup 2026 will see a changing of the guard for Argentina, whether Lionel Messi plays or not, and the country needs new superstars. Garnacho is a bright hope, who shined brightest last night.
