‘I wanted to take control’ says Manchester United’s inspired wonderkid, praises two teammates

Manchester United need players with personality and Alejandro Garnacho has it in spades.

A club like Manchester United is not one for the faint-hearted. For supporters, managers, or players.

Alejandro Garnacho already looks like he has the mentality to cope, showing he can deliver on the highest stage.

And to be fair, there were a few doubts creeping in. He was wasteful in front of goal in the defeat at West Ham, with United going four straight matches without scoring.

Alejandro Garnacho steps up

At 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa, Manchester United were slumping towards another loss. But there were some good signs as the team began to fight back into the game, winning 3-2.

Garnacho, playing on the right wing, appeared to pull one back, before it was disallowed for offside. He did not let his head drop.

If anything, Garnacho became even more determined, scoring twice to level the game back to 2-2, before Rasmus Hojlund struck a winner.

Garnacho even tried to score a hat-trick late on although couldn’t quite find a third. Still, this was his first ever Premier League brace, a sign of progress.

Garnacho explains goals and backs teammates

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Garnacho said he knew he needed to ‘take control’.

He explained: “I wanted to try and take control of things. I said we just needed one goal to get back into it, I got that first one but it was offside. But as I said before we never give up so it was a case of scoring the first goal and keeping on pressing.”

Garnacho stuck to Erik ten Hag‘s game plan which saw United control the game totally in the second half. The team were great value for the victory.

It is great to hear him speak with such maturity, with the 19-year-old able to both ‘want’ to take control, in addition to having the ability to actually make it happen.

He added, backing his teammates: “I am very happy for Rasmus also to get his first league goal. Too many people talk about the strikers at Man United, that we never score goals or get assists, but you see today Rashford with assists, goals for Rasmus and me. Everyone is very happy.”

Confidence can do a lot for a team. There could be a lot more to come from these forwards in 2024.
