Atletico Madrid’s star man Antoine Griezmann is ‘very close’ to returning to action, which will be a huge boost to Diego Simeone’s side.

The World Cup winner hasn’t completed a full game since the end of November and has been struggling to overcome a muscle injury.

The French striker played his last league match against Real Madrid on December 12 before being replaced at half-time.

He has missed the last six La Liga matches. He did return in the Copa del Rey clash against Rayo Majadahonda in January, but he suffered an injury relapse after coming off the bench and scoring.

However, the 30-year-old has trained with Pitillas, one of the reigning La Liga champions’ physios.

Although Griezmann hasn’t yet returned to training with his Rojiblanco teammates, Atletico’s number eight was carrying out physical exercises, with and without the ball.

AS have reported that Griezmann “seems to see the light at the end of the tunnel and his return would be very close”.

The match against Getafe this weekend could come too soon for Griezmann, but Wednesday’s clash against Levante could be earmarked as Griezmann’s return.

Given the latest update from the Spanish press, it looks like Griezmann is on track to face Manchester United in the Champions League last-16 first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano in 13 days time.

The return of Antoine Griezmann could be a much-welcomed boost for Simeone’s side who dropped out of the La Liga top four after being beaten 4-2 by Barcelona at the weekend.

El Cholo’s side have lost seven of their last 12 games across all competitions.
