Anthony Martial now offered record breaking contract to return to football after Man Utd exit

Anthony Martial has been without a club since July 1st, following his release by Manchester United.

Manchester United were brutal over the summer, axing several players who have been long-term servants at the club.

Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial were axed when their contracts expired, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay were the most notable sales.

These moves were necessary in order to bolster the squad to the level it has been with five first-team ready additions.

Of those released, Varane moved to Como although issues have since arisen. Shola Shoretire was another to be released and now plays for PAOK.

Martial, however, is yet to find himself a new club despite links to Lille but if reports are to be believed, a lucrative offer could be on its way.

Anthony Martial set for contract offer

Despite it being over two months since his contract at Old Trafford was officially terminated, Martial is yet to find a club willing to take him on board.

Now with the season well underway and the transfer window closed in most countries, options like Martial for free are likely to appeal to some clubs.

As reported by The Sun, Martial is now set to be offered a contract by AEK Athens.

The contract is stated to be the biggest contract in the club’s history, beating that of Erik Lamela from earlier this summer.

The wage is not named, however, whatever wage he earns at AEK with a possible move would be a pay cut on his enormous Manchester United wages.

Manchester United were right for release

Martial will ultimately be viewed as an icon at Manchester United over the past decade when things have been low at the club.

But that does not change the fact United were quite clearly correct in letting the Frenchman go, with last season showing he was done at the highest level.

Martial did not play from December until the end of the season, leaving young Rasmus Hojlund all alone as an option up-front.

Now, with Martial’s exit, the club has been enabled to bring in Joshua Zirkzee who has impressed so far – despite struggling against Liverpool.
