Man United set for windfall from Shola Shoretire’s move despite him leaving on a free transfer

Manchester United are intent on clearing house this summer in order to fund more signings after securing two first-team transfers.

There has also been a focus on improving the academy setup further, as evidenced by the potential transfers of Chido Obi-Martin and Samuel Lusale.

The value of the academy is higher than ever due to the financial concerns clubs, including United, find themselves in.

The sale of academy prospects counts as pure profit on the books and now, its value has been further realised in Shola Shoretire’s move to Greece side PAOK.

Man United set to earn from Shola Shoretire’s transfer

Manchester United elected not to renew the contract of Shoretire so from July 1st, he was a free agent talking to other clubs.

Shoretire recently confirmed he was signing with PAOK in a move that not many expected but he has bet on himself for more first-team opportunities.

Despite him leaving on a free transfer, United are still set to earn quite a windfall from the move due to his status as an academy product.

Under the rules, United will be entitled to compensation as a development fee, for their role in giving the player his starting football education.

Simon Peach reports that this fee in the case of Shoretire will be around £500k. It remains to be seen if this is a one-time payment or contingent on Shoretire hitting various milestones, as is generally the case in these compensations.

In any case, this will be pure profit on the books and is, in fact, comparable to Donny van de Beek’s transfer fee received from Girona.

Of course, that move has add-ons attached to it but still this windfall solely down to Shoretire being an academy product will do no harm!

Focusing on youth

United have always prided themselves on youth development, with some of Manchester United’s best academy players going on to have sterling careers, either at Old Trafford or elsewhere.

Even the current crop shows a lot of promise, with the U18s winning three trophies last season amid a host of youngsters looking promising.

Shoretire’s transfer is the second in this window from the exciting crop which had Mason Greenwood as well. United netted close to £22 million for Greenwood with a sell-on attached so that is pure profit too.

In the current climate, youth development has just become that important that even if players don’t go on to play for the club, they maintain huge value as pure assets.
