Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga has claimed that one former Manchester United talent is the ‘most underrated player’ he played alongside in his career.

Anthony Elanga came through the Manchester United youth academy and received his first-team debut at Old Trafford under ex-Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, the 21-year-old former United winger struggled to secure regular playing time in the first team under current Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.

Elanga made 26 appearances for United across all competitions last season and picked up two assists, but he failed to find the back of the net for the Red Devils.

The Sweden international left Old Trafford last summer and completed a move to Nottingham Forest, with United receiving a reported £15m fee for the transfer.

Following his arrival at City Ground, Elanga has impressed at times for Forest this season and has secured more regular first-team action under manager Nuno.

The former United forward has scored five times in 27 Premier League appearances for Forest this season, with Elanga starting 19 league matches under Nuno.

Elanga raves about former Man Utd talent

Speaking to Rising Ballers, former Manchester United talent Anthony Elanga was asked who was the most underrated player he played alongside in his career so far.

Elanga revealed his pick would be none other than former United prospect Angel Gomes, who came through the Premier League club’s youth academy.

Angel Gomes, who currently plays for Ligue 1 side Lille, only managed 10 appearances for the Red Devils’ senior team before his Old Trafford exit in 2020.

The 23-year-old spent his entire youth career with United and impressed at youth level for England, including lifting the U-17 World Cup and Euro Under-21 trophy.

When asked about the most underrated player he played with, Elanga responded: “Yeah. One that comes straight off my head is Angel Gomes. He’s honestly so good.

“I feel like people watched him in the [Under-21] Euros when England won and he showed his qualities as a [No] 6, No 8 or No 10.

“He’s amazing. I can name more players, but Angel comes [to] my mind really.”

Why Gomes left Man Utd

Gomes has been with current side Lille since his exit from United and enjoyed a loan spell out at Portuguese side Boavista for the 2020-21 season.

The former United player has since secured regular first-team action at Lille, having made 104 appearances and scoring eight times for the French club.

Gomes previously claimed that he left the Red Devils in the first place to secure a better “opportunity” to play football and a move to Lille “made the most sense.”

Speaking to The Athletic in 2023, he said: “I remember when I made the decision, I read a heap of messages and comments saying: ‘He left for money.’

“It didn’t even make sense. The biggest thing for me was opportunity.

“After the conversations I had with the staff at Lille, it made the most sense for me to go there because I knew I was going to get more of an opportunity; there was something in place.

“At the time, United didn’t give me the gist that was going to be the plan. I felt like I was just there.”
